We never lose sight of the fact that we're part of a much
wider community. That's why we're working very hard to ensure that we make our
pies and savouries in the right and
responsible way. Here are just a few of the things we are up to ...
War on Waste
We create waste – it’s hard not to when you’re manufacturing
over 100 000 pies a week. But by
scrutinising each and every one of our departments, we hope to eliminate
between R50 000 – R100 000 worth of waste (or around 5%) by the end of
2014, meaning less emissions from transporting waste and less landfill.
Green trucks and “bakkies”
Whilst we can’t pretend our deliveries give out as few
emissions as they did 10 years ago, when
we delivered pies by bicycle , our new fleet of 5 fuel-efficient trucks will
halve the carbon footprint of our deliveries. Plus, because like everyone else
we now have sat-nav, we’ll be planning our routes better and ensuring our
trucks have the most efficient schedules and loads, so your pies will have
travelled the minimum amount of food kilometres.
Bio Diesel Fuel
We strive to do as much as we can to keep our environment
healthy by constantly looking at renewable energy sources. As a result we now
run all our trucks off Bio-Diesel fuel which is made using all our old cooking
oil. The process allows us to not only create a fuel which gives off less carbon emmisions than that of regular Diesel
fuel , but also creates glycerol which is then converted into a Pine Gel which
is used to keep our plant looking and smelling Delhi-ghtfully Delicious all
We use 10% less water in our product storage containers cleaning process than previously, whilst still
ensuring our containers are spotless. This may not sound like a great deal, but
think of how much water you use to clean your pots and pans at home…then
multiply by several thousand litres, and you can see how this small reduction
can make a huge difference. In fact, this is likely to save around R25000 worth
of energy by the end of 2014 by us investing in our automated container washing
machine! This system would not only optimise the time and consistency at which our containers are cleaned but also
We’ve also installed movement sensors to light fittings
throughout our factory and offices – so you won’t see Delhi Delicious lit up
like a Christmas tree unless the lights are needed!
It seems like everything comes with more and more packaging
these days, doesn’t it? Not our pies. Not one extra bit of cardboard or
cellophane wrapper. In fact, by 2015, we’re hoping to reduce the amount of packaging
our products come in by 30%, whilst ensuring your pie doesn’t end up battered
and bruised, of course.
So you can enjoy your next Delhi Delicious pies
knowing that we're doing our bit for the environment.
